13th Check Payments
13th checks are paid to members, survivors, or beneficiaries of the following funds who retired before December 1, 2023, and were entitled to a benefit on July 1, 2024. If multiple beneficiaries or survivors exist for a member, the 13th check will be allocated based on a pro-rata portion of the monthly benefit. 13th checks will be paid based on the service tiers below no later than 10/1.24.

13th Check Clarification:
Upon meeting with Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS), IRTA is issuing a clarification about the recent article in the INPRS Retiree News that generated questions from members about the start date for the automatic 13th checks and 1% COLAs granted by the legislature during the 2024 legislative session.
The legislature directed INPRS to develop the technological and administrative ability to issue a 13th check or 1% COLA by July 1, 2025. INPRS was also charged with determining the surcharge to actuarially pre-fund either benefit. The legislation directed INPRS to assume that individuals who retired before July 1, 2025, will receive a 13th check and those individuals who retired after July 1, 2025, will receive a 1% COLA. However, retirees will not receive the yearly automatic 13th check or 1% COLA until an implementation date is passed by the legislature.
Retirees will receive a 13th check in September of 2024, but as things stand, will not receive another enhancement until the automatic enhancements are implemented by the legislature. IRTA will advocate during the 2025 legislative session for an enhancement every year until the “automatic” enhancements are implemented!
